INTRODUCTION OF SOCIOLOGY
The first social scientist to use them term Sociology in 1836 was a Frenchman August Comte, who lived from 1798-1857. As coined by Comte, the term sociology is a combination of two words. The first part of the term in a Latin, socius- that may variously mean society, association, togetherness or companionship. The other word, logos, is of Greek origin. It literally means to speak about or word of society.
Comte decided that to understand society, one had to follow certain procedures, which we know now as the scientific method. The scientific method is the use of systematic and specific procedures to test theories in psychology, the natural sciences, and other fields. Comte also believed in positivism, which is the application of scientific method to the analysis of society.
